A Rapid and Low-Cost PCR Thermal Cycler for Low Resource Settings
BACKGROUND Many modern molecular diagnostic assays targeting nucleic acids are typically confined to developed countries or to the national reference laboratories of developing-world countries. The ability to make technologies for the rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases broadly available in a portable, low-cost format would mark a revolutionary step forward in global health. Many molecular a...
متن کاملA Rapid and Low-Cost PCR Thermal Cycler for Infectious Disease Diagnostics
The ability to make rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases broadly available in a portable, low-cost format would mark a great step forward in global health. Many molecular diagnostic assays are developed based on using thermal cyclers to carry out polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse-transcription PCR for DNA and RNA amplification and detection, respectively. Unfortunately, most commerc...
متن کاملThe Rotary Zone Thermal Cycler: A Low-Power System Enabling Automated Rapid PCR
Advances in molecular biology, microfluidics, and laboratory automation continue to expand the accessibility and applicability of these methods beyond the confines of conventional, centralized laboratory facilities and into point of use roles in clinical, military, forensic, and field-deployed applications. As a result, there is a growing need to adapt the unit operations of molecular biology (...
متن کاملCost Reduction of PCR Thermal Cycler
This paper presents a PC-based thermal cycler with a local-host architecture, where a PC is employed as the host. The local system only executes the thermal cycling process and the PC is responsible for the management of PCR protocols with a convenient GUI. The presented local-host system greatly reduces the development time and the maintenance cost, providing an economical PCR thermal cycler.
متن کاملAutoSyP: A Low-Cost, Low-Power Syringe Pump for Use in Low-Resource Settings
This article describes the design and evaluation of AutoSyP, a low-cost, low-power syringe pump intended to deliver intravenous (IV) infusions in low-resource hospitals. A constant-force spring within the device provides mechanical energy to depress the syringe plunger. As a result, the device can run on rechargeable battery power for 66 hours, a critical feature for low-resource settings where...
